SPRINGFIELD, MO — Today, City Utilities of Springfield held a press release with CenturyLink to announce a public-private partnership that will enable commercial ISP partners to deliver Gigabit Fiber to Springfield-area businesses and residents by Summer 2020.
SpringNet, a division of City Utilities, will be investing $120M in running over 1000 miles of new fiber to local business and residential areas throughout Springfield in the next 2-3 years. City Utilities will be making the SpringNet fiber network available for lease to commercial Internet Service Providers (ISPs) who will market the service and provide service and support to end customers.
CenturyLink is the first Internet Service Provider (ISP) to partner with City Utilities of Springfield as an anchor tenant on the SpringNet fiber network. CenturyLink is advertising Fiber Gigabit services with speeds up to 940 mbps. Access to lease the fiber network is available to other local ISPs, which is expected to lead to a competitive landscape. City Utilities expects that CenturyLink will be able to serve their first customers by Spring/Summer 2020.
